Dallas County Veteran Services strives to assist every Veteran, surviving spouses and eligible dependents in the Dallas County area. County Veteran Services Officers (CVSOs) assist veterans and their families in understanding what benefits are available, filing necessary claims and representing individuals and presenting claims in VA hearings. Dallas County currently services a population of over 100,000 veterans. 

When claimants need assistance with getting their benefits due as a veteran or an eligible dependent, utilizing the assistance of a County Veteran Service Officer (CVSO) is imperative. CVSOs know that traumatic experiences in the military can create profound changes in veterans’ lives. 

“I was in a dark place until I contacted The Dallas County Veteran Service. Meeting [CVSO] Lavette Domineck changed my life,” U.S. Air Force Veteran Debra Walters said. “Her professionalism, thorough knowledge and eagerness to help me was beyond exceptional. She submitted my claim, and after adjudication, I was granted 100 percent service connection for my disabilities.”

CVSOs are trained and accredited by the VA and other recognized organizations. Their services include applying for federal and state benefits and providing resources related to: 

· Compensation and Pension 
· Health Care 
· Employment 
· Burial & Survivor 
· Housing 
· Transportation 
· Military Records 

The work of Dallas County Veteran Services also proves rewarding for the CVSOs. “I am fortunate enough to give back to the veterans community by providing excellent customer service via phone or through office visits by directing veterans, who have questions about their claims to our friendly Veteran Services Officers, or by guiding them to other veteran agencies that can better assist their needs,” Dallas County Veteran Services Senior Secretary Shannon James said. 

James joined the department Nov. 7, 2016 as a lead clerk. “It is gratifying working in this department because I get to help veterans. In the future, I look forward to learning more about Veteran Assistance Services so I can be of better service within the Veterans Community. Thank you for your service!”
